Education system
US degrees are credit-based and modular. Undergraduate degrees typically span four years with liberal-arts breadth; masters degrees run 1.5–2 years with course, project and thesis routes.
Admission requirements

Tuition, living and scholarships
Tuition varies widely: USD 25,000–65,000/year for private universities, USD 15,000–45,000/year for public. Add USD 12,000–20,000/year for living. Costs vary sharply by city — plan realistically before you deposit.
Assistantships (RA/TA) and departmental fellowships are the most reliable funding source, particularly for PhDs and research masters. Merit scholarships exist but rarely cover full cost of attendance.
Student visa & work rights
F-1 student visa. You need admission to a SEVP-approved institution, an issued Form I-20, SEVIS fee payment and a completed DS-160 before your visa interview. Show clear academic and financial evidence.
On-campus employment permitted from day one within visa limits. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorisation — always confirm eligibility with your Designated School Official before accepting any role.
12-month OPT after graduation. Eligible STEM degrees may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension (total up to 36 months). Employment must match your field of study.
