UK Student and Graduate Route Explained

The UK's Graduate route is one of the simplest post-study visas globally — but the duration is changing.

Student visa basics

Requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor, English proficiency and financial evidence.

Working during studies

Up to 20 hours per week during term for eligible degree-level students, full-time in vacation.

Graduate route

Two years for most applications through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, most applicants receive 18 months. Doctoral graduates may receive three years.

Route cannot be extended

You may switch into other qualifying visas, such as Skilled Worker, if you meet the criteria.

Actionable checklist

  • Track application date if near 2027
